Paul and Barnabas had a sharp disagreement about whether to take John Mark on another missionary journey. 'The disagreement became so sharp that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, while Paul chose Silas and left.' This is one of the most human moments in Acts. Even the apostles fought.
I had a best friend for twenty years. We planted a church together. Then we fundamentally disagreed about how to handle a scandal in our congregation. I wanted to bring it to light; he wanted to contain it. We said some harsh things. We ended up parting ways. For years I felt like a failure. But this verse helped me: even godly people can disagree so sharply that they part. It doesn't mean one of them was faithless.
Turns out Mark went on to write a gospel. Barnabas mentored him, and it worked out. Paul picked Silas, and that partnership was fruitful too. The split wasn't the end of God's story. It was a pivot. My former friend and I have recently reconnected. We didn't reconcile the original disagreement. But we can respect each other again. Sometimes the most Christian thing isn't harmony. It's honest disagreement followed by forgiveness.
