The Lamb opens the first seal, and John hears one of the living creatures say 'Come!' A white horse appears, and its rider holds a bow and is given a crown. He rides out conquering and to conquer. A red horse appears whose rider is given power to take peace from the earth. A black horse appears whose rider holds a scale and speaks of economic trouble. A pale horse appears whose rider is Death, and Hades follows him.
The horsemen represent conquest, war, famine, and death. They're not demons. They're consequences. They flow from human choice and God's judgment combined. Conquest leads to war. War leads to famine. Famine leads to death.
These aren't distant future events for John's readers. These are real threats in real time. The point isn't to identify specific years. It's to understand that suffering has meaning in God's plan. It's part of the unfolding of history toward its culmination.
