A mighty angel picks up a boulder the size of a large millstone and throws it into the sea, saying 'With such violence the great city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found again. The music of harpists and musicians, flute players and trumpeters, will never be heard in you again.'
No worker of any trade will ever be found in Babylon again. The sound of a millstone will never be heard in her again. The light of a lamp will never shine in her again. No one will buy her merchandise anymore.
In her was found the blood of prophets and of God's people, of all who have been slaughtered on the earth. The judgment is just. Babylon's blood guilt brings her fall. She hasn't just opposed God. She's opposed God's people.
The devastation is total and final. Everything that gave Babylon meaning and power is gone. The economic, cultural, and political systems that sustained her vanish. This is the end of the old order.
