When the fifth angel sounds, John sees a star fallen from the sky to the earth. He's given the key to the Abyss. He opens it, and smoke rises like smoke from a large furnace. The sun and sky are darkened by the smoke. Out of the smoke come locusts with the power of scorpions.
They're told not to harm the grass or plants, but only to torment people who don't have the seal of God on their foreheads. They're not to kill them, but to torment them for five months. The torment is so intense that people wish to die but can't.
The locusts have a king, the angel of the Abyss. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, in Greek Apollyon, which means Destroyer. The first woe is passed. Two more are coming, and they're worse.
