Now all has been heard. Here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of humanity. After all the exploring, all the questioning, all the wrestling with meaninglessness, the Teacher arrives at this simple conclusion.
It feels almost anticlimactic. After pages and pages of complexity, he boils it down to something a child could understand. Fear God. Keep his commandments. That's it. That's the whole point. Not great achievement or massive wealth or perfect understanding. Just reverence and obedience.
I think the simplicity is intentional. The Teacher has shown us that everything else we pursue leads to emptiness. The meaning isn't in the pursuing. It's in the relationship. It's in standing before God in reverence and ordering your life by God's values rather than the world's values. Everything else is commentary. This is the center.
