Moses summoned all Israel and said: Hear, O Israel, the decrees and laws I am about to declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. The Ten Commandments are repeated in Deuteronomy. The second giving of the law. This suggests that the law is so important that it can't be said once and forgotten. It needs to be said again. And again. Every generation needs to hear it. Every person needs to encounter it freshly. I think about how we treat Scripture sometimes: as if reading it once is sufficient. But the truth that transforms us often requires repetition. The promise we need to hear changes at different seasons of life. The law that seemed harsh at twenty might seem merciful at fifty. The same passage of Scripture read again can hit differently. Renewal is built into the covenant. It's expected. It's assumed that you'll need to hear these words more than once.
