These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land you are about to enter and possess, so that you, your children and their children after you may fear the Lord your God and keep all his decrees and commands that I give you, all the days of your life. The law isn't meant to be burdensome. It's meant to protect you. To help you fear the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom. To create a people who are marked by obedience and love for God across generations. Not just you, but your children and your children's children. The law is for the sake of continuity. For creating a covenant community that lasts beyond individual lives. I think about the decisions I make as a parent. I'm not just teaching my children to make good decisions. I'm trying to create in them habits and values that will shape how they raise their own children. The law Moses describes isn't oppressive. It's generative. It's about creating something that outlasts you.
