On the day the tabernacle, the Tent of Testimony, was set up, the cloud covered it. The cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day. The Israelites are never left to figure out direction on their own. There's a visible sign of God's presence, a cloud that shows them when to move and when to stay. This detail matters because it shows that guidance isn't hidden. It's not cryptic. It's not available only to the super-spiritual. Everyone can see the cloud. Everyone knows when it's time to pack up and when it's time to settle down. After years of trying to discern God's will through prayer and fasting and seeking wise counsel, I'm learning that sometimes God's leading is just obvious. Sometimes the cloud is so clearly moving in one direction that you'd have to be deliberately stubborn to pretend you don't see it. Sometimes the block is lifted and the way opens. Sometimes the closed door stays shut. The cloud doesn't require spiritual genius to interpret. It requires attentiveness and obedience.
