A new believer asked me last week how she'd know God's will for her life. I found myself pointing to Numbers, of all places. The Israelites followed the cloud - literal, visible, constant guidance. When the cloud moved, they moved. When it stayed, they stayed.
But here's what grabbed me as I reread it: they couldn't control the cloud. They couldn't predict it. Sometimes it probably seemed like the worst possible time to move camp. Sometimes it probably seemed like the worst possible time to stay put. But they had to trust the signal.
We don't have a pillar of cloud anymore, but we have the Spirit. And honestly, discernment still feels a lot like following an inexplicable signal sometimes. You get the sense to go, or to wait, and it doesn't always make logical sense. The practice isn't about understanding the timing. It's about staying attentive and responsive. The Israelites learned to read the signal. We learn to listen for the still small voice. Both require the same basic skill: staying ready to move.
