The high priest Hilkiah said to Shaphan the secretary, I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the Lord. It's a remarkable moment. While repairs are being made to the temple, the ancient scripture is discovered. For a generation, the people have been living without access to God's written word.
When Shaphan reads it to King Josiah, the king tears his clothes in distress. He realizes how far his people have drifted from what God asked of them. The law isn't new, but it's been lost and then found. Discovering it again changes the trajectory of the entire nation.
I think about what gets lost in our lives when we stop engaging with Scripture regularly. Not that the Bible changes, but our orientation to it does. We drift. We forget. And sometimes we need to come back and encounter God's word as if for the first time. Maybe we find something we missed before. Maybe we see how far we've drifted. Either way, the encounter can transform us.
