The genealogy begins: 'This is the book of the generations of Adam.' It's framing human history as a story being told, a chronicle being kept.
I'm a documentarian, and this phrase has become my north star. What we're doing - recording lives, creating archives - we're participating in something ancient. We're saying these people mattered, their stories deserve to be kept, they belong in the record.
My clients are often people without much documentation. Homeless people, undocumented people, people erased by institutions. Putting them in 'the book' matters more than I can articulate.
