My grandmother learned this blessing as a child in 1920s Ireland, and she taught it to me when I was small. I still pray it almost every night. The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face to shine upon you. Even in the darkest seasons of my life, those words have been what I reach for.
What strikes me now in my seventies is how comprehensive it is. Blessing - that's favor, abundance, good things. But also kept - protected, sustained, maintained. Not just showered with gifts but held. Then the face shining upon you - that's presence, attention, joy. And grace - unmerited favor. Finally, peace - shalom, wholeness, completion.
I've learned these aren't separate gifts. They layer on each other. Blessing without the keeping is temporary. Keeping without the shining face is joyless. God's intention for His people is complete and layered and real. I pray this over my grandchildren now.
