As Abraham is about to kill Isaac, the angel catches him. Not stops him before he raises the knife - catches him in the act. The intervention is in the moment of near-completion.
God doesn't prevent the test. He lets Abraham go nearly all the way, and then intervenes. That's different from preventing the test altogether.
When I'm being tested, I sometimes experience God's intervention similarly - not preventing the struggle, but catching me at the last moment. That's still grace, though it's more fraught than prevention would be.
