John sees four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back the four winds. Then he sees another angel coming from the east with the seal of the living God. The angel calls out to the four angels: 'Do not harm the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads of the servants of our God.'
John hears the number of those sealed: one hundred forty-four thousand from all the tribes of Israel. Twelve thousand from each tribe. The number is organized, precise, complete. It's not about ethnic Israel. It's about God's people sealed and protected.
The sealing happens before the winds are released. Protection precedes judgment. God marks his people before allowing destruction to proceed. That's comfort to those facing persecution. You're marked as God's. That's a visible distinction in the spiritual realm, even if not in the physical one.
