The Lord said to Moses: Speak to the Israelites and say to them: Throughout the generations to come you are to make tassels on the corners of your garments, with a blue cord on each tassel. You are to have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the Lord. Tassels. A physical reminder. Something visible. Something you touch. When I converted to Christianity, I bought a small wooden cross and wore it on a chain. It wasn't magical. It couldn't protect me or grant me special favor. But every time my hand touched it, I remembered. Every time I saw it in the mirror, I felt tethered to my commitment. The tassel works the same way. It's not the tassel itself that keeps you obedient; it's the reminder. It's the moment of pause when you notice it and remember who you are and what you've committed to. Visual reminders matter. Physical practices matter. We've become so disembodied in our faith. Everything is intellectual and spiritual and internal. But the body matters. Tassels matter. Tattoos matter. Rings matter. Whatever physical symbol tethers you to your deepest commitments, let it work.
