The LORD said to Moses: Speak to the Israelites, and tell them to make fringes on the corners of their garments throughout their generations and to put a blue cord on the fringe at each corner. You shall have the fringes so that when you see them you will remember all the commandments of the LORD and do them.
God is giving the people a tool to help them remember. Not because they're stupid. Because we're all weak. We forget. We need visible reminders of what we've committed to.
I wear a simple ring on my left hand that I bought when I decided to give my life to God after years of running. It's not fancy. But when I see it, I remember. This hand is committed. This life is not my own. I'm not just thinking about it. I'm seeing the reminder.
The Israelites would see the fringes on everyone's clothes - constant reminder. Not just in the temple during worship. In the market. At home. When you're getting dressed, you're reminded of the covenant.
We live in a time that's good at hiding reminders and at constant distraction. Our phones scroll endlessly but don't remind us of what matters. Our clothes are unmarked.
I'm trying to be more intentional about visible reminders. A verse written down. A photo. A small object. Something physical that says: this is what I've committed to. This is who I've decided to be. Because I know my default is forgetting. I need help remembering.
