The servant of the man of God got up and went out early, and he saw that the city was surrounded by horses and chariots. He cried out in fear: Oh no, my lord! What shall we do? But Elisha said: Don't be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them. Then he prayed, and the servant's eyes were opened. He saw the hills filled with horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
This is one of my favorite moments in Scripture because it's so real. The servant isn't comforted by a philosophical argument. He's not told that his fear is illegitimate. He looks at the actual situation and sees a real threat. But Elisha shows him that there's a different level of reality he's not able to see on his own.
That's what faith gives us sometimes. Not the removal of the threat, but a wider perspective on what's actually happening. Maybe the situation isn't as hopeless as it appears. Maybe there are resources and protections at work that you can't normally perceive. The verse suggests that we live in a reality much larger than what our senses alone can tell us. We're surrounded by more than we know.
