Jesus tells the Laodicean church 'Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.' This isn't rejection. It's the discipline of love. The one truly loved is the one corrected.
Then Jesus gives the most tender image: 'Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I'll come in and eat with them, and they with me.' He's not forcing his way in. He's knocking. Waiting. Inviting.
The image of eating together represents intimacy and covenant. To those who overcome, Jesus promises they'll sit with him on his throne. The passage moves from rebuke to restoration. The wayward congregation can be restored through opening the door.
