I'm a climate scientist, and I read John's images of environmental catastrophe as somehow prophetic of what we're creating. Intense heat. Water turning foul. Darkness covering the earth. These are warnings.
But what moves me is that even in John's visions, the catastrophe doesn't stop at 'look how bad it gets.' There's always a resolution. There's always the sense that this isn't the end of the story.
I use Revelation when I'm speaking about climate change. Yes, we're scorched by the sun. But we're not without hope. We're not doomed. We're at a turning point. God still has purposes that will be fulfilled.
It keeps me from cynicism while maintaining realism. The crisis is real. The future is not fixed.
