Sarah overhears the promise of a son and laughs - not out loud, but to herself. Her laughter is hidden, private. She's not mocking openly; she's internally processing the absurdity.
My spiritual director pointed out that this is often how doubt works - internal, private, not openly shared. And God doesn't rebuke Sarah for it. He engages with her, addresses it, but doesn't shame her for the hidden laugh.
I've learned to bring my hidden laughs, my private skepticism, to God. The interior doubts don't need to be suppressed. They can be acknowledged and worked through.
