The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Jesus is directly inverting the religious logic. The Sabbath—one of the Ten Commandments—exists for human flourishing, not to constrain it.
I grew up with rules that felt like they had weight independent of their purpose. Keep the rule because it's the rule. But Jesus is saying the point of any law is human wellbeing. If a law harms people, it's being misused. That's revolutionary in a rules-based faith. It means every commandment has a purpose, and that purpose is always ultimately about love and flourishing. If I'm using Scripture to justify harm, I'm using it wrong. The text exists to free people, not imprison them.
