John defines sin as lawlessness. Not just breaking rules, but rejecting the order and structure God established. Sin is chaos. Rebellion. Disorder.
He says Jesus appeared to take away our sins, and in him is no sin. That's the basis of hope. The one who came doesn't have the problem he came to solve. His sinlessness is why he could bear our sin.
John warns that anyone who continues to sin belongs to the devil. But anyone born of God doesn't make a practice of sinning because God's seed remains in them. The person born of God is fundamentally reoriented. Sin is no longer their native language.
