Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.' Jesus makes this claim to Martha while her brother Lazarus is dead.
He's not saying: this particular situation will be fine. He's making a larger claim about what he is and what he offers. Resurrection isn't just a future event. It's a present reality in him. If you're connected to the source of life, death doesn't have final say. I find this comforting in a different way than I used to. Not as insurance against dying. But as assurance that death doesn't terminate relationship with the source of life.
