Moses collected the redemption money from those firstborn who exceeded the number of Levites. This is where the theology gets tangible. The Levites were redeemed to serve in place of all the firstborn sons of Israel. But some firstborn exceeded the Levite count, so they had to be ransomed with silver. Redemption isn't free. It costs something. In our culture, we've made grace feel like a discount, a clearance sale where everything is marked down to zero. But look at this system: actual payment happens. Real value transfers hands. When my daughter finally forgave her sister for betraying her confidence, it wasn't because they did nothing. It was because my other daughter wrote letters, did chores without being asked, rebuilt trust through months of small actions. Forgiveness can be free, but reconciliation costs. Redemption is real work, real payment, real restoration.
