I came to faith as a missionary's kid, and I remember my parents praying for open doors - doors to preach, doors to plant churches, doors to reach people. It seemed exotic and important. When I became an adult, I stopped thinking about open doors.
But I'm starting to see what they meant. In my regular job as a salesman, I get conversations with customers where something deeper emerges. A customer mentions a family problem and suddenly we're real with each other, not just transactional. Those are open doors. Or I meet someone at my kids' school who's actually interested in faith questions.
I'm praying again for open doors - not for me to dramatically quit and become a missionary, but for natural opportunities where I can be honest about what I believe, where my faith becomes visible in my regular work. It turns out open doors aren't just for missionaries. They're for anyone paying attention to where God wants to work.
