Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are told to bow to the king's statue or be burned alive. And they say: our God is able to save us. But even if He doesn't, we won't bow. That's faith - trusting God's power while accepting that He might not use it to save you from suffering.
They end up in the fiery furnace, and God does save them. But that's not guaranteed by their faith. Their faith is not 'God will make this work out.' Their faith is 'God is good regardless of what happens.'
I've been a Christian for a long time, and I realize a lot of my faith has been conditional. If God blesses me, if God solves my problems, if God makes my life work, then I'll believe. But that's not real faith. Real faith is: God is good, and I choose to trust Him even if He doesn't save me from suffering.
