As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. 'Good teacher,' he said, 'what must I do to inherit eternal life?' Jesus answered, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good, except God alone.' Then Jesus begins listing commandments.
The man claims to have kept all of them. And then: 'Jesus looked at him and loved him.' Then he says, 'One thing you lack. Sell everything and give to the poor.' The man goes away sad because he had great wealth.
Mark adds that detail: Jesus looked at him and loved him. This isn't judgment. This is recognition of someone genuinely seeking but also genuinely unable to let go of what's securing him. The wealth isn't evil. But it's become what he's actually trusting instead of God. Jesus loves him enough to name that. And loves him enough to let him choose his wealth over the kingdom. Love doesn't force. It invites clearly and respects the choice.
