The jubilee section concludes with this: Israelites are not to be enslaved because they belong to God, not to other humans. Even if debt makes them servants, they're ultimately God's servants, which limits any human's claim on them. Their deepest loyalty and obligation flows to God, not to earthly masters.
This is revolutionary language. It's a claim about human worth that supersedes economic arrangements. You might sell yourself into servitude, but you haven't surrendered your fundamental identity as God's servant. At jubilee, that identity reasserts itself. You return to freedom because freedom is your original and true status.
For us, this becomes deeply personal. We're God's servants, which means no human authority can ultimately claim us. No job, no relationship, no system can demand that we violate our conscience or abandon our relationship with God. When we feel trapped by circumstances or people, the jubilee principle reminds us: your deepest allegiance belongs to God. That truth alone is liberating.
