After the flood, God makes a covenant: never again will the waters become a flood to destroy the earth. He's making a promise about constraint - He's limiting His own judgment.
That matters because it means creation is secure in a different way. God could destroy it again, but He's covenanting not to. He's voluntarily limiting Himself.
When I think about parenting, I think about this. I have the power to harm my children in ways they couldn't control. Making a covenant with myself - I will not do this, I will constrain myself - that's what protects them. God models something I try to live out.
