It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. John opens this section with a statement about love's completeness.
Then Jesus washes feet. The act that follows the statement is deliberately lowly. The full extent of his love expressed through foot-washing. Not through judgment or dominance. Through service. I've realized that love's extent isn't measured by how high you can elevate someone. It's measured by how low you're willing to go for them.
