Paul's making a point about certainty. How can we be sure God loves us? Not through good feelings or spiritual experiences, but through an objective historical event: Christ died for us while we were still sinners.
The contrast is striking. Most love is conditional on likability. You love people who are good to you, who share your values, who deserve affection. But here's love of a different species entirely. We weren't lovable when Christ died for us. We were actively opposed to God, hostile to His purposes. And He died anyway.
I've noticed this verse becomes anchor when my emotions are unreliable. On days when prayer feels hollow and faith feels thin, I can point to the cross as objective evidence that God's commitment isn't based on my feeling loved. The love is demonstrated, proved, settled in history. His sacrifice happened whether or not I'm currently grateful, whether or not I'm living faithfully, whether or not I deserve it. That kind of love can be trusted because it doesn't depend on my fluctuating merit.
