Joseph dies and is embalmed - the Egyptian way - and buried in Egypt. But his final request (which was honored before his death) is that his bones be brought to the promised land.
Joseph's body remained in Egypt, but his covenant remained with the land of promise. Even in death, even separated from the land, he belongs to it.
I think about migration and diaspora - people scattered from home, sometimes never returning, but their descendants eventually do. Joseph's bones stayed behind, but the memory didn't. That's how covenant works across generations - it's transmitted even when the person isn't there to transmit it directly. The bones matter. The promise matters. The way forward is remembered.
