After the dream, Jacob makes a vow - if God will be with him and provide for him, then the Lord will be his God. It's not quite unconditional. It's conditional on provision.
I used to judge Jacob for this - like he's negotiating instead of trusting. But my therapist pointed out that this is actually how humans work. We commit to people when they show themselves trustworthy. Jacob has just experienced God's presence. Now he's saying: if this continues, I'll commit.
My own faith journey involved similar conditions. God, if you're real, if you prove yourself, I'll follow. And slowly, He did. The conditions weren't cynicism; they were honesty. And meeting me where I was.
