God promises He will go down with Jacob to Egypt and also bring him back up. Even leaving the promised land, even settling in a foreign territory, Jacob isn't abandoned. God's presence follows.
I work with immigrants, and this verse is central to our ministry. Leaving your land doesn't mean leaving God. God goes where you go, even to the place you never planned to be.
My own grandparents left everything to come here. I'm reading their story through Jacob's - the fear of it, the necessity of it, the God who honors the journey itself.
