Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Shema. The most important prayer in Judaism. The declaration that God is one. That God's identity is unified and undivided. This isn't complex theology. It's a core affirmation. One God. Not many gods. Not competing loyalties. One center of allegiance. I grew up in a culture that offers a thousand gods: money, status, appearance, achievement, pleasure. Each demands devotion. Each offers the promise of fulfillment. But the Shema insists: there is only one. Only one God. Everything else is secondary. Everything else is idol. When I'm anxious about money, the Shema reminds me: the Lord is my God. When I'm desperate for approval, the Shema centers me: the Lord is one. When I'm scattered among competing demands, the Shema gathers me: hear. Listen. Remember. One.
