After the dream at Bethel, Jacob takes one of the stones he slept on and sets it up as a pillar. He's making the dream concrete, creating a memorial.
I do something similar - I journal spiritual moments, I light candles, I mark time. Jacob's impulse to make stone into a monument resonates with me. Transcendent experiences need to be anchored in something physical.
That's part of spiritual practice - making the invisible visible, creating containers for what we've experienced.
