The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom. It's one of the most hope-filled passages in Scripture. The messenger is anointed for a specific work: healing the broken. Jesus reads this about himself in the synagogue.
What I notice is that the work involves both spiritual and material care. Good news to the poor. That means actual poverty gets addressed. Healing to the brokenhearted. That means emotional and relational wounds matter. Proclaiming freedom to captives. That means oppression and injustice are real and need to be addressed.
Whenever I read this, I ask: am I participating in this work? Am I bringing good news? Am I healing brokenness? Am I proclaiming freedom? These aren't passive virtues. They're active works. And they're the work of anyone who believes that God cares about the suffering in the world. That includes me, that includes you. We're all called to participate in this healing.
