The prosperity gospel church I grew up in taught that godliness leads to wealth. Real faith results in blessings. I pursued that hard - tithed, gave offerings, claimed promises. I got more anxious and less satisfied.
Paul's saying something completely different. Godliness with contentment is great gain - not godliness with wealth. Contentment is the wealth. It's the actual treasure.
I'm learning to distinguish between desires that keep me growing spiritually and desires that are actually just consumerism dressed up. A modest house that's paid for - that creates contentment. A bigger house that requires endless upkeep - that creates anxiety. I'm learning to choose the former. My life is so much lighter.
