The Lord spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. Moses would return to the camp, but his young minister Joshua remained in the tent.
This is such an intimacy - not formal, hierarchical, or distant. Not even the reverent distance of ordinary worship. Friend-level communication. You can imagine the conversational ease: Moses says something difficult, God responds, Moses asks clarifying questions.
My spiritual direction practice is built on creating enough safety for people to talk with God with that kind of ease. So many people have learned to approach God with formal language and emotional distance. What if they could speak to their Creator like they speak to their closest friend?
