Paul promises: 'No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.' Temptation is survivable.
I work with addiction counselors. We tell clients over and over: you can resist. There's always a way out. And they don't believe us. The craving feels absolute. But Paul is right—even the worst craving is survivable. It might feel impossible, but there are people, prayers, alternative behaviors that can get you through the next five minutes.
Recovery is building the habit of taking the way out that God provides. It's calling a sponsor. It's going to a meeting. It's getting on your knees. It's a walk around the block. Small ways out, moment by moment, until the craving passes. Paul isn't minimizing temptation. He's insisting it's not final. You can survive it. That hope has saved so many lives.
