Paul preaches to the Jews in the synagogue and offers this: 'Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from everything you could not be freed from by the law of Moses.' This is the gospel in its most basic form: forgiveness is available through Jesus, and it's better than anything the law could offer.
I'm a recovering addict. For fifteen years, I used heroin. I stole from people I loved. I hurt everyone who tried to help me. I thought about killing myself. The law said I deserved prison. And in some sense, I did. But something in me kept reading the Bible in those dark years. This verse about forgiveness through Jesus became my lifeline.
I've been clean for eight years. I've made restitution where I could. But more importantly, I've learned that Jesus's forgiveness isn't just legal. It's relational. He's actually restored me to relationship with God. Not because I deserved it. Because of grace. I work at a rehab now, and I tell my clients: you can't fix yourself. The law can't fix you. But Jesus's forgiveness is real. The redemption is possible. I'm living proof.
