Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.' And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. Jesus is being executed, and his prayer is for forgiveness for those executing him.
This is the moment where forgiveness becomes most difficult and most powerful. When you have every right to curse, you choose blessing instead. When you could demand justice, you offer grace. I don't think Jesus is saying their ignorance erases their culpability. But he's breaking the cycle of violence through forgiveness. He's modeling what the kingdom looks like when someone has the power to retaliate and chooses mercy instead. I think about moments where I've been wronged and had to choose: do I respond with anger or grace? Do I perpetuate the harm or interrupt it? Jesus shows what's possible. It doesn't come from weakness. It comes from strength secure enough not to need retaliation.
