When Aaron finishes the offerings, fire comes forth from before the Lord and consumes the offerings and the fat upon the altar. All the people saw it, and shouted for joy and fell on their faces.
I've been in many worship services, but I've never seen anything like this described. The visible presence of God, active and affirming. The text says the people shouted - ecstatic, spontaneous celebration.
My Charismatic friend says I'm missing something by not anticipating God's visible intervention in worship. This verse makes me wonder what we've lost in rationalist spirituality - the expectation that God shows up, confirms, validates through signs we can actually perceive.
