Peter warns that false prophets will appear among believers, introducing destructive heresies and denying the sovereign Lord. They'll exploit people with stories they've fabricated, motivated by greed and lust.
The danger isn't from outside enemies only. It's from within. People claiming to have the truth but leading people astray. Peter's concern is that you don't recognize the deception. They seem like believers. They use the right language. But their fruit is destruction.
Peter says their condemnation isn't sleeping. God is watching. The judgment is certain even if it's not immediate. That's encouragement to believers: don't think you can stay fooled. The truth will come out. The false teachers will be exposed.
