I'm a hospice chaplain working with people in their final days. This verse about Jesus eternally living to intercede for us has become a profound comfort, both for my patients and for me. Even when we're dying, even when earthly support systems are failing, even when we're most vulnerable, Jesus is actively interceding for us before God.
I share this with people who are terrified of judgment, who carry deep guilt, who are uncertain about whether they've done enough to be acceptable to God. There's a presence actively working on their behalf, even now, even as they face their final hours. Jesus isn't distant or disappointed. He's interceding.
For me personally, as I work with suffering and death constantly, knowing that Jesus is actively interceding—not passively existing somewhere but actively working—has kept my faith alive. I'm not alone in bearing witness to suffering. I'm not alone in hoping for mercy. Jesus is interceding not just for the people I work with but for me as I carry this weight. That presence makes it bearable.
