My grandmother used to say that knowing something in your head and knowing it in your heart were two different things. Paul's praying for the Ephesians' 'eyes of your heart' to be enlightened, and I think he's getting at exactly what Grandma meant.
I've memorized all the doctrine. I can defend the faith in an argument. But there are whole sections of Scripture I've read a hundred times that suddenly bloom with meaning when I'm grieving, or when I'm watching someone else's faith up close. That's the eyes of the heart opening. That's enlightenment that no amount of head knowledge can produce.
I've started praying this prayer for my kids, and it's changed how I parent. Instead of drilling them on Bible facts, I'm asking God to help them see spiritually - to understand grace not as a doctrine but as a way of being loved, to comprehend hope not as optimism but as unshakeable confidence in God's plan. It's much slower work than flashcards, but it's the real work.
