Jesus acknowledges Ephesus's hard work, perseverance, intolerance of evil, and testing of false apostles. They're doing well by external measures. But he grieves that they've abandoned their first love.
The softening of love happens gradually. Not through one dramatic decision, but through countless small choices. You get focused on right belief and right behavior and lose the joy that motivated them.
Jesus tells them to remember, repent, and do the things they did at first. Not go back in time, but recapture the passion. The one who overcomes will eat from the tree of life in the paradise of God. Return to love, and you return to Eden.
