When the dragon finds he's been cast out of heaven, he pursues the woman who gave birth to the male child. But she's given the wings of a great eagle so she can fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she's cared for for three and a half years.
The dragon spews water like a river out of his mouth, trying to sweep her away. But the earth helps her by opening its mouth and swallowing the river.
Raging with fury, the dragon goes off to wage war against the rest of her offspring, those who keep God's commands and hold fast to the testimony of Jesus. The woman is protected, but the battle continues for her children.
The protection is real but limited. Not everyone escapes. Those who remain on earth face direct opposition. But they're kept by God's grace and their own faithfulness.
