John makes a stark distinction. Do not love the world or the things in the world. If you love the world, the love of the Father isn't in you. Then he describes what comprises the world: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life.
These aren't all bad things in isolation. Food, beauty, accomplishment matter. But when they become the center, when you're pursuing them as the ultimate good, you've shifted your allegiance. You're saying 'These things will satisfy me.' Faith says they won't.
John adds that the world and its desires are passing away. But anyone who does the will of God abides forever. That's the difference between the world and the kingdom. One is temporary. One is eternal. The question becomes which one you're actually investing in.
