The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, came forward. Their father had no sons, so they came before Moses and asked: Why should our father's name disappear from his clan because he has no son? Give us a property as an inheritance among our father's relatives. Women standing up and asking for their rights. They're not asking for something outside the law; they're asking for the law to apply to them the way it applies to men. Moses brings the case before God. And God agrees: they're right. The law changes to include daughters. This is remarkable. The system adapts because someone had the courage to ask. The daughters of Zelophehad changed the inheritance law of Israel. They didn't stage a rebellion. They made a reasonable case. And they were heard. So many unjust systems persist because people assume they can't be changed. But institutions are sometimes more flexible than we think. Sometimes asking is the first step to transformation. Sometimes one person saying: this isn't fair is enough to start the process.
